  1. My 20mtr tall 40year old Kowhai appears to have suddenly died! I see small patches of green but 95% looks dead how could this have happened?

    1. Hey Ann,
Thank you for writing. I can understand your thoughts & feelings. It is never easy to see our beloved nature friends getting weak, especially a 40-year-old Kōwhai.

If you are still seeing small patches of green, there is still some life left in the tree. In mature Kōwhai, sudden decline can sometimes happen due to root rot, prolonged wet soil, drought stress, extreme weather, or hidden root damage that may have started long before visible symptoms appeared.

For now, avoid removing the tree too quickly. Prune only completely dead branches (carefully), check for any soft or rotting areas near the base, & make sure the soil is draining well without overwatering. A healthy remaining root system can sometimes help the tree slowly recover.

Because of its size & age, it may also be best to have an arborist inspect it for both recovery chances & safety.

Let me know, whatever you decide. Lets try to recover it together!
